Sunday, August 28 the Spirit of Baltimore smashed into the pier at Fells Point as it was returning to its berth. The collision is said to have happened some time before 3 a.m. More than 400 guests and crew were onboard for a "midnight soiree."
“Spirit Cruises takes the safety of our passengers, community and shipmates very seriously. The company is conducting a full investigation and cooperating fully with the United States Coast Guard regarding the incident that occurred in the early hours of August 28,” said Dan Leaman, General Manager, Mid-Atlantic Region, Entertainment Cruises (parent company of Spirit Cruises).
Two guests were hospitalized with minor injuries and about 60 feet of pier in Fells Point was sheared off. Two watercraft at the marina were scraped but the Spirit of Baltimore suffered only cosmetic damage. The cause of the collision remains unknown and the captain has been suspended pending further investigation, Spirit Cruises said in a statement. The name of the captain has not been released. Coast Guard officials continue to investigate.
