On Monday, August 8, a Massachusetts Lobsterman had a surprise catch: a bright blue, two-pound lobster. Wayne Nickerson immediately separated the lobster from the others in the trap, and called his wife who named the creature Bleu.
Oceanographers estimate that just one in two million lobsters is blue. The coloring comes from an excessive amount of a particular protein produced by a genetic defect. And if catching one blue lobster isn't impressive enough, this is the second blue lobster Wayne Nickerson has caught; the first was in 1990.
Nickerson and his wife hope to share Bleu with a local aquarium so people can see the rarity.
