On Sept. 21, Jenkins was opening the fuel dock at the Pasadena-based yacht club when he saw the eagle in the water, struggling to get itself out. He grabbed a net and pulled the eagle out of the water to safety.
The wet and cold raptor was then taken to Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research in Newark, Del., where it received a full examination, X-rays and fluids. The eagle tested positive for lead poisoning, which damages the brain and causes birds to be subdued. It later was diagnosed with a respiratory illness. It received chelation therapy to remove the lead and antibiotics for a respiratory illness.
Lisa Smith, executive director of the rescue center, said the bird's illnesses were too much for the bird to overcome. The 5-year-old bird died last week.
"We really appreciate everyone at the yacht club working to get the bird to us," she said. "We did everything we could but between the lead poisoning and the other problem it was too many injuries."
