Photo courtesy of the City Government of Puerto Princesa NPR reports that a fisherman in the Philippines may have discovered the largest natural pearl ever found, weighing in at 75 pounds. The fisherman says he found the pearl 10 years ago in a giant clam, and then kept it under his bed all this time as a good luck charm. The pearl's existence was revealed only recently by Aileen Cynthia Maggay-Amurao, a tourism officer in Puerto Princesa, on the island of Palawan. She says that the fisherman is one of her relatives. When he moved, he entrusted the pearl to her and she in turn convinced him to put the pearl on display. The pearl is now on display in the city hall of Puerto Princesa though it still remains the property of the fisherman who found it. It weighs 75 pounds and is more than two feet long and one foot wide. The current world record pearl was also discovered off the coast of Palawan. It weighs 14 pounds and was valued at $93 million in 2003. Find more photos of the pearl on display here.
