March 17 is held to be the day of St. Patrick's death, the patron saint of Ireland. Today the holiday is often celebrated by breaking out the green attire and green booze. So for all you pirates out there, we've compiled some fun facts and helpful tidbits for making the most of the day. Savvy? Avast ye! St. Patrick was not in fact Irish. Born an English nobleman, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates at the age of 16. March 17 will henceforth be known as St. Pirate’s Day. Don’t get the shamrock? Few do. But one tradition any pirate can get behind is the “drowning of the shamrock.” Place the three-leafed plant into a glass of whiskey, then bottoms up. (We’ll say it’s for luck.) Yes, the song is “Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum” but better get used to Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of Guinness! At least for today. Leprechauns are your new spirit animal. These boozy little men were cranky souls known for their trickery. Hard to say who loves gold more, leprechauns or pirates. Take stock of how many "sheets to the wind" your comrades are. One sheet is mildly drunk, four sheets means passed out. Green grog all around! Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. After imbibing all that green grog don’t drink and drive or you may have to walk the plank. And by walk the plank we mean a sobriety test. Be safe out there, readers. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
